Technology
ShoZu believes that the “mobile web” is about mobilising existing web applications and services, not about creating new and separate mobile-only services. Our technology is designed to overcome the challenges of mobilising existing online communities (such as videosharing, photosharing, blogging and social networking sites), and other internet services (such as RSS feeds, podcasts and videocasts).

In our view, simply designing a version of an interactive website for a mobile browser doesn't create a good user experience on a phone because:

  • network latency can create long wait times for interactive applications in a mobile browser
  • patchy network availability means users can't access the service anytime, anywhere
  • large amounts of data are transferred just to do the simplest things (e.g. adding a tag to a photo)
  • uploading large files via the browser ties up the phone for long periods and requires a restart if the connection drops
  • a browser interface is typically not able to work around the limitations of data entry (number keypad) and menu navigation (no mouse!) on different varieties of mobile handset.

Web 2.0 technology

Mobilising Web 2.0 services requires a different kind of technology to create a good user experience. ShoZu’s patented data replication technology is designed to do exactly this. It enables a client application on the phone to synchronize data quietly in the background with one or many websites, via an intermediary gateway server. The ease of use made possible by ShoZu’s technology is unique to the market. It can be used to support applications such as video and photosharing, RSS feeds, podcasting, MP3 download, and device management. The technology fully supports uploads and downloads, and can deal with both user-generated content and commercial media.

Our core philosophy lies in the continual innovation and development of technology which overcomes the barriers to effective and profitable mobile services.

ShoZu Service

ShoZu is our direct-to-consumer service, built on our patented data replication technology. ShoZu enables end users to get videos, photos, music and other types of content on and off their mobile phones easily, efficiently and reliably, without interrupting normal use of the phone. ShoZu users can do the same things they normally do on their favorite online video and photosharing sites and web RSS readers, but from an optimized environment on the mobile phone. Specifically, ShoZu lets users publish and share their own content (videos ad photos) from their phones to the web, and receive third-party content from the web on their phone.

Data is transferred between the ShoZu handset application and the ShoZu server (hosted by ShoZu), which then synchronizes data with third-party websites (such as Buzznet, Flickr, Kodak EasyShare Gallery, Webshots and many others).

The ShoZu application on a user’s phone communicates with the ShoZu server via a mobile data network. The handset and server communicate using ShoZu’s proprietary protocol over TCP/IP.
